What should you consider when buying artwork as a gift?

A friend of mine is moving into a new apartment soon, and I thought about giving them a painting as a housewarming gift. The problem is that choosing artwork for someone else seems much harder than choosing it for yourself. I know roughly what colours they like, but I have no idea what kind of art they would choose if they were shopping themselves. I also do not want to buy something that looks nice to me but does not fit their home at all. Has anyone had experience choosing artwork as a gift?

I would probably focus on the recipient’s general style rather than trying to guess one specific favourite artist or painting. If you know the colours used in their apartment, that can narrow things down a little. I would also avoid choosing something extremely large unless you know they have enough wall space. Another option is to select something with a fairly versatile composition that could work in different rooms. That gives the person more freedom to decide where they would like to display it.
