Hi everyone,
our hydraulic cutterhead dredge encountered a high-pitched screeching noise while excavating heavy silt and river bed rocks this morning. The main drive casing temperature surged past normal limits, and we spotted emulsified grease leaking past the lower shaft seal.
Upon pulling the magnetic drain plug, we discovered microscopic bronze shavings suspended in milky, water-contaminated fluid.
Our chief engineer thinks river water compromised the shaft packing, leading to rapid bearing corrosion and gear tooth scuffing under heavy load. Has anyone handled water intrusion on submerged cutter head drives? We need to determine if a full industrial gearbox repair is unavoidable.
