Has Anyone Worked With Independent Project Consultants?

I was discussing a challenging project recently and someone mentioned Boultwood Associates as an example of an independent consultancy that teams sometimes engage when technical and commercial issues become more complicated. I have never worked with an outside consultancy in that kind of situation, so I am curious about what people actually found most valuable. Did having an independent perspective help improve communication and decision making, or did the outcome mostly depend on how prepared the project team already was? I would really appreciate hearing real experiences and different viewpoints.
